Thoughts about fan art and selling it...

Journal Entry: Sat Sep 12, 2009, 8:41 PM
My dad has a friend who owns a print store. He saw some of my fan arty stuff and liked it, and wanted to print them out on T-shirts and other such things to sell at his shop. Supposedly, I'd be making a bit off of whatever he sold. However when he asked me, I refused and actually my dad seemed pretty upset; because he went through a lot to get me connections and stuff I suppose.

The thing is, I am actually very uncomfortable with selling fan art related things outside of conventions. If I had leftovers, I guess I would sell them online solely to get rid of them, but I wouldn't have them constantly for sale to make a profit from them. Once they're gone, they're gone and while I'm thankful and flattered seeing the request for more keychains or buttons or what have you, I don't reprint until the next convention. I'm not trying to tell artists who DO sell fanart online and outside of conventions that what they are doing is WRONG. Because GOD knows that hundreds of people get awesome stuff from these artists, when it's not available to them where they are. This is just a personal feeling for me....

It's more like this: I really get heated up when I see like, Pacific Mall (a big Chinese mall in Ontario) shop owners selling merchandise featuring fan art. NOT EVEN RIPPED OFF ORIGINAL ART. Images from like, japanese art sites and even dA.
Besides, if I were a series creator and I saw people making a constant profit off my ideas without permission, well I'd be pretty pissed off.

I LOVE to draw fanart, and I like selling fanart at conventions because it feels like I'm sharing what I love to do with others that feel the same, rather than drawing just for money. And I feel like I charge more for time spent on everything, than for profit.

My parents don't seem to get it when I try to talk about copyright issues to them and they told me I "overthink things WAY too much" and that "the world isn't that honest anyway". And I guess it probably isn't.

REGARDLESS, I'm kinda miffed, because I feel very strongly about this kind of thing.

Besides the want to RANT, I wanted to hear your opinions on this and whether or not you DO think I'm overthinking the whole thing too much. Should I take this print dude's offer?

...how many of you would walk into a print shop and buy a fan art T-shirt off the wall there ANYWAY. I MEAN HONESTLY. -_-;
